The Eddas

Hunding

Family: Hundings · Role: king · First appears: Elder Edda · The First Lay of Helgi Hundingcide · Part 1

Hunding long ruled over lands and people before Helgi caused him to fall when the prince was fifteen winters old. In the Second Lay of Helgi Hundingcide, Helgi is said to have slain King Hunding and thereafter been named Helgi Hundingsbani.

Hunding was the father of Alf (son of Hunding), Eyiolf, Hiorvard (son of Hunding), Havard, Heming, Hervard and Lyngvi. He was an enemy of Sigmund, and they slew each other’s kinsmen. In Gripir’s Prophecy, Gripir foretells that Sigurd will avenge his father and Eylimi by defeating Hunding’s sons; the Second Lay of Sigurd Fafnicide likewise recalls that Hunding’s sons would laugh if Sigurd failed to avenge Eylimi.
