Pausanias' Description of Greece

Inachus

Family: mythological · Role: father of Io · First appears: Book 1 · Chapter 25

In Book 1, Chapter 25, Inachus is named as the father of Io. In Book 2, Chapter 15, he is described as the father of Phoroneus, though the account says Inachus “was not a man but a river.”

At Argolis, Inachus, Cephisus and Asterion judged the dispute between Poseidon and Hera, awarding the land to Hera; Poseidon then took away their water. In the same chapter, Inachus is said to have given his name to the river and sacrificed to Hera. In Book 2, Chapter 16, another account names him as the father of Mycene.
