In c. 1378, Pope Urban VI sought Richard II’s aid against the cardinals who had elected Clement VII, while Clement VII’s messengers appealed for the king’s support. Persuaded by the archbishop of Canterbury, Richard II granted Urban’s request and rejected Clement’s. Around c. 1382, Urban granted Henry Spencer, Bishop of Norwich authority to preach a crusade against those supporting Clement VII, with indulgences for those who took the cross.
Around c. 1387, Walter Disse obtained papal faculties from Urban for distribution to those who would pray and pay for them, while Peter Pateshull was made the pope’s chaplain. By c. 1395, theologians convened by Richard II at Oxford wrote in support of Urban and sent their sealed statement to Charles VI. In c. 1399, Urban committed Adam Eston to prison in Genoa.
