The Danish History, Books I–IX

Roller

Family: Danes · Role: son of Ragnar the champion and Kraka; Erik's brother · First appears: Book Five · Part 5

In Book Five · Part 5, Roller, son of Ragnar and Kraka, vowed to join Frode’s company, and Erik Shrewd-spoken later made the same vow. The next day, Ragnar revealed hidden treasures to the brothers and let them take what they wished; meanwhile, he sent Roller to find out what had happened at home. Kraka urged Erik to help his brother, and she and Ragnar took the brothers by sea to Denmark. At the palace, Roller caught Erik as he tottered after a slippery hide was pulled away; in Book Five · Part 9, Roller killed Grep with his sword.

In Book Five · Part 12, Roller and Erik rescued Frode from the sea after his ship was wrecked; Frode lamented that “rumour will recount for ages that Frode was taken captive.” In Book Five · Part 14, Roller married Hanund, Frode’s divorced queen. Afterwards, Frode gave Roller a realm stretching over seven provinces, and Erik gave him the province Gotar had bestowed on him. In Book Five · Part 21, Roller was sent to Norway for supplies; in the autumn, he made Sundmor and Nordmor tributary after slaying their king, Arthor.
