In chapter 2, Prince de Conde asked Gaston to host Louis XIV at Blois during the royal journey, serving as the king’s marechal-des-logis: “I venture to ask your royal highness’s permission to mark the house you inhabit as our quarters.” Gaston accepted the request, while Raoul, described as a gentleman of the prince’s suite, accompanied him. By chapter 4, after the commotions of the Fronde, Louis de Conde had made “a public, solemn and frank reconciliation with the court” and was restored to favor; Raoul was sent back to him, though the prince had already offered Raoul advantages of great distinction.
In chapter 7, Prince de Conde followed Louis XIV in a triumphant procession alongside M. Dangeau and other courtiers. In chapter 15, after paying his respects to the king, he marked Poitiers as a place of rest for the royal party. By chapter 40, he visited Mazarin, despite the earlier opposition between Conde and Mazarin, and Raoul followed him. In chapter 42, he expressed a desire to count Athos among his friends, calling him one of the first gentlemen of France, while also speaking of the respect and admiration he held for him; he also learned that Philip was to marry the sister of Charles II.
In chapter 52, Raoul returned from Vincennes at the head of fifty dragoons entrusted to him by Prince de Conde. By chapter 65, Prince de Conde and Turenne were described as rivals, recalling their opposition at Jargeau, Gien, and the Faubourg Saint-Antoine; Turenne nevertheless called him “My cousin” before withdrawing with his army.
