Scarus
Family: Antony's camp · Role: soldier · First appears: Antony and Cleopatra · Act IV, Scene V
At Alexandria in Act IV, Scene V, Scarus served as a soldier in Antony’s camp, fighting alongside Mark Antony as Antony’s forces beat Caesar’s troops and drove them into retreat. Mark Antony regarded Scarus as both a friend and a patron, promising to reward his courage and the comfort he gave.
In Act IV, Scene VIII, Cleopatra treated Scarus as a friend and promised him, “I’ll give thee, friend, An armour all of gold. It was a king’s.” After the fleet’s defeat, at the ground between the two camps in Act IV, Scene X, Mark Antony ordered Scarus to make everyone flee: “Bid them all fly; For when I am revenged upon my charm, I have done all. Bid them all fly! Be gone!”
