The Rámáyan of Válmíki

Śatrughna

Family: Ayodhyá · Role: prince · First appears: Book I, Canto 19 · The Birth Of The Princes

Born to Sumitrá and Daśaratha alongside Lakshmaṇ in Book I, Śatrughna was named by Vaśishṭha with the other princes. In Book I, Janak agreed that Śatrughna and Bharat would marry his nieces; Śatrughna wed Srutakírti at the princes’ wedding. He later departed with Bharat and Yudhájit, and in Book II remained Bharat’s close companion.

After Daśaratha’s death in Book II, Śatrughna fell in grief beside Bharat, then performed the funeral rites with him. He seized Manthará in anger, but released her when Bharat intervened. At their farewell, Ráma embraced both brothers and asked them not to be angry with Kaikeyí. Śatrughna rode with Bharat to Nandigrám; in Book VI, when Bharat sent him to arrange a welcome for Ráma, he ordered men to prepare and decorate the road for Ráma’s return.
