Tutor
Family: Gallic revolt · Role: commander · First appears: Histories IV.59-62
Tutor, a commander in the Gallic revolt, besieged Cologne and forced its inhabitants and the soldiers on the Upper Rhine to swear allegiance to the Empire of All Gaul. At Mainz he killed the officers and expelled the camp-prefect who refused the oath. During this campaign, “The command was now divided between Tutor and Classicus.”
At Bingium, Tutor was routed by Sextilius Felix after a traitor revealed a ford across the Nava. Tutor and Valentinus then led the Treviri back into the field, first killing the Roman officers Herennius and Numisius to reduce hopes of pardon. After Tutor’s defeat, Civilis and Classicus panicked at the success of the Roman arms; when Civilis urged waiting for reinforcements from across the Rhine, Classicus instead adopted Tutor’s policy of attacking immediately.
Later, Tutor joined Civilis, Verax, and Classicus in simultaneous attacks on four Roman garrisons, each leading one attacking party. Petilius Cerialis routed the Germans; Civilis and Verax escaped by swimming across the river, while boats arrived to fetch Tutor and Classicus.
