the Sultan (Marko's father-in-God)
Family: Turks · Role: ruler · First appears: Chapter IV · Prince Marko and a Moorish Chieftain · Part 1
In Chapter IV · Prince Marko and a Moorish Chieftain, the Moorish chieftain demanded the Sultan’s daughter in marriage and challenged him to fight. The Sultan offered great wealth to anyone who would take the challenge in his stead, but when the Moor shattered the Palace windows with his club, he promised his daughter to him. The next morning, after the Sultana told him of her dream, he sent Prince Marko a firman asking him to fight the Moor and promising gold if he saved the Princess. When Marko came to their aid, the Sultan and the Sultana sent him food and wine; the next morning, the Sultan presented his daughter and wedding gifts to the Moor.
In Chapter IV · Prince Marko and the Turkish Huntsmen, the Sultan received Marko at Yedrenet, heard his account, and gave him one thousand ducats. He addressed him as “my dearest son Marko” and said that no hero could equal him.
In Chapter IV · Prince Marko and Moussa Kessedjiya, the Sultan sent Tyouprilitch and an army against Moussa Kessedjiya, but Moussa dispersed the army, captured Tyouprilitch, and sent him back bound. When Tyouprilitch urged the Sultan to call on Marko, the Sultan believed Marko had died in the dungeon where he had kept him for three years. Tyouprilitch freed Marko and brought him to the Sultan, who sent him to the New Inn with provisions. When Marko was ready to face Moussa, the Sultan gave him three tovars of gold. The Sultan’s hunting party with Amouradh is also recounted in Chapter IV · Prince Marko and the Turkish Huntsmen.
