Pausanias' Description of Greece

Actæon

Family: Theban · Role: hunter · First appears: Book 1 · Chapter 44

Actæon was the son of Aristæus. In Book 1, Autonoe, the daughter of Cadmus, grieved excessively at his death.

In Book 9, Stesichorus of Himera represented Artemis dressing Actæon in a deerskin so that his own dogs would devour him, preventing his marriage to Semele. The account also linked him to a rock where he slept after hunting and a spring where he saw Artemis bathing. In Book 10, Aristæus led Greeks to Sardinia some years after the Libyans, and they were said to have migrated in excessive grief at Actæon’s death.
