Pausanias' Description of Greece

Calamis

Family: Greek · Role: sculptor · First appears: Book 1 · Chapter 3

Calamis’s works include an Apollo called Averter of Evil (Book 1, Chapter 3) and a votive offering of Callias designed by him (Book 1, Chapter 23). At the temple of Æsculapius in Book 2, Chapter 10, he made a beardless gold-and-ivory statue of the god, holding a sceptre and a pine-cone.

Later accounts attribute to Calamis an imitation of the Wingless Victory statue (Book 5, Chapter 26), horses and riders associated with Hiero the son of Dinomenes (Book 6, Chapter 12), and statues of Ammon, Dionysus, and Hermes (Book 9, Chapters 16, 20, and 22). In Book 10, his works include a statue of Hermione offered by the Lacedæmonians; Praxias, whose faces appear on statues in that chapter, is identified as his pupil.
