Regin
Role: Sigurd's foster-father · First appears: Chapter XIII · Of the Birth and Waxing of Sigurd Fafnir's-bane
In Chapter XIII, Regin, son of Hreidmar, fostered Sigurd and taught him arts, runes, chess, and many tongues. He urged Sigurd to seek Fafnir’s hoard on Gnita-heath, promising wealth and fame. In Chapter XIV, Regin told how his brothers Fafnir and Otter were his father’s first and second sons, while he was the third; he had gone to the king and become master-smith. He agreed to make Sigurd a sword with which to slay Fafnir.
In Chapter XV, Regin forged two swords for Sigurd, but Sigurd broke both. Regin then reforged Gram from its shards, and Sigurd tested it without breaking it. In Chapter XVII, after Sigurd had avenged his father and kin, he reaffirmed his promise to kill Fafnir. Regin praised Sigurd’s victory over Fafnir, but in Chapter XIX Sigurd learned that Regin meant to beguile him and struck off Regin’s head.
