Barjesus
Also known as: Elymas · Role: sorcerer and false prophet · First appears: Acts 13
Barjesus, also known as Elymas, was a sorcerer and false prophet. In Acts 13 at Paphos, Barjesus opposed Paul and Barnabas, seeking to turn the deputy away from the faith: “But Elymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turn away the deputy from the faith.”
Paul then pronounced judgment on Barjesus, saying, “thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season.” Immediately, Barjesus became blind and went about seeking someone to lead him by the hand. When Sergius Paulus saw this, he believed, astonished at the doctrine of the Lord.
