Adils
Also known as: King Adils · Family: Upsala · Role: king · First appears: Younger Edda · Poetical Diction · Rolf Krake
In the Poetical Diction’s tale of Rolf Krake, Adils, king in Upsala, was married to Yrsa, Rolf Krake’s mother, making Rolf his stepson. Adils fought Ale (king of Norway) on the ice of Lake Wenern, where Ale and much of his army fell. He later asked Rolf to come to his aid, promising to pay his army, and sent berserks including Bodvar Bjarke, Hjalte the Valiant, Hvitserk the Keen, Vot, Vidsete, Svipday and Beigud.
After Rolf chose treasures, Adils refused to hand them over and withheld the berserks’ pay. Rolf escaped Adils’s pursuit at the Fyrisvold by scattering gold, then throwing him the ring Sviagris as a gift; Adils rode on while the Swedes stopped to gather the gold.
