Ten Years Later

Raoul de Bragelonne

Also known as: Bragelonne / De Bragelonne / M. Raoul / M. de Bragelonne / Monsieur de Bragelonne / Raoul / the vicomte · Family: French nobility · Role: young nobleman · First appears: Chapter 7

In chapter 7, Raoul de Bragelonne rides out from the Palais Royal with De Guiche and De Wardes on the mission to bring the young princess to Paris. De Guiche calls him “that Raoul is my most intimate friend,” while Comte de la Fere, Raoul’s father, is mentioned in connection with De Wardes. Raoul is also courting Mlle. de la Baume le Blanc de la Vallière; hearing Louise’s name causes him to turn pale.

By chapter 13, Raoul’s friendships include Buckingham and De Guiche, with whom he praises the princess during their journey. He writes to La Vallière, but Montalais returns four unanswered letters to him through Malicorne on the morning fixed for the marriage ceremony. Raoul receives a sealed letter from Mademoiselle Aure directing him to the Palais Royal, tries to find M. d’Artagnan, and accepts Malicorne’s offer to guide and introduce him.

In chapter 14, Mademoiselle Aure explains that she intercepted Raoul’s letters so he would not know La Vallière had moved to Paris. La Vallière then accepts his marriage proposal by placing both hands in his and fleeing. Later, in chapter 41, she admits that she may not love him after all: “Suppose that I thought I was in love, and that I am not.”
