The Rámáyan of Válmíki

Śarabhanga

Family: Hermits · Role: sage · First appears: Book III, Canto 5 · Sarabhanga

In Book III, Canto 5, Śarabhanga told Ráma that Indra had come to take him to Brahmá’s sphere, but that he had waited to see his honoured guest. He advised Ráma to visit Sutíkshṇa, whose woodland home was near and who would help him.

Śarabhanga made offerings, entered the fire and cast off his body; he then rose from the pyre in radiant youth and reached Brahmá’s sphere, where Brahmá welcomed him. In Book III, Canto 7, Sutíkshṇa named Śarabhanga as the one who had told him that he was the son of Gautama.
