The Twelve Caesars

Caius Octavius

Role: father of Augustus · First appears: Julius Caesar 83

In Julius Caesar’s last will, Julius Caesar named Caius Octavius as heir to three fourths of his estate, while his cousins Lucius Pinarius and Quintus Pedius received the remaining fourth. Julius Caesar also adopted Caius Octavius into his family, requiring him to assume Caesar’s name.

After his praetorship, Caius Octavius obtained Macedonia by lot. On his way there, he cut off bandits occupying the territory of Thurium, then, in governing the province, defeated the Bessians and Thracians in a great battle. He was “from his earliest years, a person both of opulence and distinction,” and Quintus was to imitate the example of his neighbour Octavius.
