In c. 1199, King John invested William Marshal with the sword of the earldom of Striguille, after William had helped proclaim him king and keep the peace. King John later hired him to lead a hundred knights into Normandy, and in 1205 at Porchester William and Hubert Walter persuaded the king to abandon his invasion and dismiss most of his army. By c. 1213, King John entrusted William with the administration of a matter at his going overseas, and he gave his daughter Eleanor of England, Countess of Leicester in marriage to William.
