Gods and Fighting Men

Laegaire

Also known as: Laegaire Liban · Family: Connacht · Role: champion · First appears: The Gods · The Ever-living Living Ones · Laegaire in the Happy Plain

Laegaire, son of Crimthan Cass, went down into the lake after Fiachna, son of Betach, with fifty fighting men. He and his men defeated Goll (son of Dalbh) and his forces, then helped free Fiachna’s wife from the guarded dun and returned her to him. That night, Fiachna’s daughter Deorgreine was given to Laegaire as his wife, and his fifty men were given wives as well.

After a year, Laegaire asked to hear news of his own country. Fiachna told him to bring horses and not to dismount, whatever happened. When Laegaire returned to Ireland, Crimthan Cass offered him rule over the three Connachts, but Laegaire chose to return to the Sidhe kingdom. He was made king there with Fiachna, and did not come out again.
