The Peloponnesian War

Eurymedon

Family: Athenian · Role: commander · First appears: Book 3 · Chapter 10 · Part 5

In Book 3, Eurymedon arrived at Corcyra with sixty Athenian ships from Leucas, and the Peloponnesians fled by night. During his stay, the Corcyraeans killed citizens they considered enemies. He was later designated, with Sophocles, to follow Pythodorus with the main Athenian force.

In Book 4, Eurymedon and Sophocles set out with forty ships for Sicily, with Pythodorus already ahead of them; a squall carried their fleet into Pylos. At Corcyra, they joined the townsmen against the party on Mount Istone. After the stronghold surrendered, the prisoners were transferred under truce, but when the agreement was voided they were handed over to the Corcyraeans, who killed them. On their return to Athens, Eurymedon was fined for taking bribes to depart when they might have subdued Sicily.

In Book 7, Athens appointed Eurymedon as a colleague of Nicias, and he sailed to the army with ships and money, carrying assurances that reinforcements would come. Later, as Demosthenes’s colleague, Eurymedon arranged ships and infantry at Corcyra and helped send ships with Conon to reinforce Naupactus; he and Demosthenes also renewed an old friendship with Artas. They arrived in Sicily with a large force, captured a fort at Euryelus, and, when Demosthenes urged departure, Eurymedon agreed, though Nicias objected.
