Menelaus
Family: Greek mythology · Role: satrap · First appears: Book 1 · Chapter 6
In Book 1, Chapter 6, Menelaus was Ptolemy’s satrap and was defeated by Demetrius (son of Antigonus) in a naval engagement. At Ilium, he took a spear from Euphorbus. In Book 3, Chapter 12, his allies deliberated at Hellenium on sailing to Troy and punishing Paris for the rape of Helen; later, during the sack of Ilium, Menelaus pursued Helen with a sword and breastplate, intending to kill her.
After the capture of Ilium, Menelaus returned home safe, and eight years later placed statues of Thetis and Praxidice near the temple of Aphrodite Migonitis. He and Helen were said to be buried at Therapne. While sailing with Nestor, he stayed behind at Sunium to perform the funeral rites for Phrontis, his pilot. The material also says that Troy was utterly destroyed by Paris’s outrage against Menelaus.
