The Rámáyan of Válmíki

Ráma With The Axe

Family: Hermits · Role: Ráma’s namesake · First appears: Book I, Canto 3 · The Argument

In Book I, Canto 3, Ráma With The Axe fought his namesake, Ráma. In Canto 74, the saints approached him with a gift, which he accepted in silence; Vaśishṭha and the other saints gathered and questioned one another. Jamadagni’s son, sprung from Bhrigu, then spoke to Ráma.

In Canto 76, he recalled that he had given the whole land to Kaśyap. Ráma’s arrow barred him from the glorious worlds he had won by penance, and he fled from sight to rest on Mahendra’s height.
