Pausanias' Description of Greece

Tegeates

Family: Arcadians · Role: son of Lycaon · First appears: Book 8 · Chapter 3

In Book 8, Chapter 3, Tegeates was a son of Lycaon and, with his brothers, built a city: “and Tegeates built Tegea”. Nyctimus was the eldest son and succeeded to Lycaon’s power, while the other brothers built cities where they chose. Tegeates was married to Mæra.

After Scephrus died, Tegeates and Mæra sacrificed to Apollo and Artemis at Tegea. Later, when a great famine came upon the land, the oracle at Delphi told them to mourn for Scephrus. Tegeates’s sons included Scephrus, Cydon, Archedius and Gortys; the three latter sons migrated to Crete.
