Alevide

Also known as: son of Alev / the Alevide / the son of Alev · Family: Esthonians · Role: companion · First appears: Canto X · The Heroes and the Water-demon

In Canto X · The Heroes and the Water-demon, Alevide, the son of Alev and cousin of Kalevide, bargained with the water-demon at Mustapall for silver in exchange for stopping the river dam. During the night he dug a concealed pit beneath his cut hat, so the silver poured in by the demon would fall through. He later carried goods to Finland for Kalevide to pay the sword debt.

In Canto XV · The Marriage of the Sisters, Kalevide entrusted three sisters to Alevide, who married the youngest. When the famous sorcerer carried off the second sister, Alevide and Sulevide went in search of her; they crossed the sorcerer’s lake, slew him and freed her.

In Canto XVII · The Heroes and the Dwarf, Alevide founded a fortified city and fought alongside Kalevide, Olevide and Sulevide on the plains of Esthonia. At the cave, an old woman gave the travellers cabbage soup and warned them about a strange youth. Alevide let the dwarf with the gold bell taste it, and the dwarf emptied the pot.

In Canto XIX · The Last Feast of the Heroes, Alevide waited for Kalevide and helped him after he emerged exhausted from below. In Canto XX · Armageddon, Alevide joined Kalevide and Sulevide in burying treasure at dead of night, and followed Kalevide as his shield-bearer.
