Pausanias' Description of Greece

Ptolemy the brother of Lysandra

Also known as: Ptolemy · Family: Macedonians · Role: ruler · First appears: Book 1 · Chapter 10

In Book 1, Chapter 10, Lysandra fled with her family to Seleucus and then sought refuge with Ptolemy. Chapter 16 identifies Ptolemy as her brother and says he had fled to Seleucus from Lysimachus; when Seleucus’s army reached Lysimachia, Ptolemy secretly killed him and became king of Macedonia. He was also called Lightning.

Ptolemy later ventured to fight the Galati and was killed by the barbarians, after which Antigonus the son of Demetrius recovered the kingdom. Book 10, Chapter 19, likewise recounts that he treacherously killed Seleucus, who had sought refuge at his court, and that Ptolemy fell in battle with many Macedonians.
