Anna Karenina

Lily

Family: Oblonsky · Role: child · First appears: PART THREE · Chapter 7

At Ergushovo in chapter 76, after a bathing-shed was made from straw hurdles, Lily began bathing. This helped Darya Alexandrovna begin to realize “if only in part” her hopes for a peaceful or comfortable life in the country.

In chapter 77, Darya Alexandrovna took Lily with Aliosha, Tanya, Grisha, and Nikolinka to mass to receive the sacrament after nearly a year’s absence. Lily was the smallest and was “bewitching in her naïve astonishment at everything”; while gathering mushrooms with Miss Hoole, she found a large birch mushroom by herself, prompting general delight. In chapter 78, Lily begged to go to Levin, and Darya Alexandrovna handed her to him so he could carry her on his shoulder while running.
