Gemariah
Also known as: Gemariah the scribe / Gemariah the son of Shaphan · Family: Judah · Role: envoy · First appears: Jeremiah 29
In Jeremiah 29, Gemariah the scribe served as an envoy of Judah when Zedekiah sent him with Elasah to Babylon, to Nebuchadnezzar: “whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent unto Babylon to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon.” He is identified there as the son of Hilkiah.
By Jeremiah 36, Gemariah was present among the princes when Baruch’s scroll was read after Jehudi was sent to summon him. Identified then as the son of Shaphan and the father of Michaiah, Gemariah joined Delaiah and Elnathan in pleading with Jehoiakim not to burn the scroll, but the king refused to listen.
