Pashur
Family: Judah · Role: priest and chief governor · First appears: Jeremiah 20
Pashur, of Judah, was a priest and chief governor. In Jeremiah 20, identified as the son of Immer, he heard Jeremiah prophesy, then struck him and put him in the stocks at the high gate of Benjamin by the house of the LORD. On the morrow, he released Jeremiah, who declared, “The LORD hath not called thy name Pashur, but Magormissabib.”
Jeremiah then declared that God would make Pashur a terror to himself and his friends, give Judah into Babylon’s hand, and send Pashur and his household into captivity, where he would die and be buried. In Jeremiah 21, Pashur, identified as the son of Melchiah, was sent by Zedekiah with Zephaniah to seek the LORD’s counsel about Babylon’s war; Jeremiah commanded them what to say to Zedekiah.
