Pausanias' Description of Greece

Chrysothemis

Family: Argos · Role: statue-maker · First appears: Book 6 · Chapter 10

Chrysothemis was the first victor in the hymn contest honoring Apollo at Delphi, described as “The most ancient contest.” The account calls him a Cretan and says his father was Carmanor, who is said to have purified Apollo.

In Book 6, Chrysothemis and Eutelidas are credited with making statues after learning their art from earlier generations. An inscription also names them as the makers of statues of Theopompus (son of Damaretus)’s father and grandfather.
