The New Testament

Gamaliel

Role: Pharisee and doctor of the law · First appears: Acts 5

Gamaliel, a Pharisee and doctor of the law, persuaded the council in Acts 5 to release the apostles after they had been beaten and warned not to speak in the name of Jesus, an action involving Peter. He cited Theudas, who had boasted of being somebody before being slain, and Judas of Galilee, who drew away many people before perishing.

By Acts 22, Gamaliel was remembered as the mentor who brought up Paul in Jerusalem and taught him according to the law of the fathers: “yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers”
