Myths of the Iroquois

the hunter (Chapter 041)

Family: Indian village · Role: father and hunter · First appears: Infant Nursed By Bears

In “Infant Nursed By Bears,” the hunter set out from an Indian village with his wife and child, and later lived in the same place with his older son. After his wife died, he buried her and abandoned the infant in a hollow tree. The infant later joined him and his older son, and was content to remain with his father and brother.

When the two boys told the hunter they were going west to kill the great beasts, he returned home and told his story; the warriors then set out after them.
