Pausanias' Description of Greece

Alexander (son of Olympias)

Also known as: Alexander · Family: Macedonian · Role: son of Olympias, grandson of Neoptolemus · First appears: Book 1 · Chapter 11

In Book 1, Chapter 11, Alexander is identified as the son of Olympias, daughter of Neoptolemus, and as a cousin of Pyrrhus (son of Æacides) through their shared ancestry: Neoptolemus and Arybbas had the same father. The text says they were “only related to Alexander by ancestry.”

By Book 9, Chapter 7, Alexander’s sons Hercules, born to Barsine, and Alexander, born to Roxana, are described as poisoned. Cassander is said to have acted chiefly out of hatred for Alexander, endeavouring “to destroy all the house of Alexander”.
