The Three Musketeers

Grimaud

Also known as: the lackey · Family: Athos’s household · Role: valet · First appears: Chapter 7

Grimaud, also known as the lackey, serves as the valet in Athos’s household. In chapter 7, Athos has trained him in his service in a peculiar manner; Grimaud is strongly attached to Athos and greatly venerates his talents.

In chapter 27 at Amiens, though wounded, Grimaud goes down to the cellar when Athos orders him to join him, and Athos admits him before barricading the door again. In chapter 51, in connection with Richelieu, he is ordered to eat a piece of paper as punishment and drink a glass of wine afterward; at the same time, he destroys Marie Michon’s letter by grinding it between his teeth and swallowing it. The next morning at Armentières, he is among the lackeys ordered to search separately for Milady’s retreat, and by chapter 67 he follows Athos.
