Robert of Belesme
Also known as: Robert / Robert de Belesme · Family: Normans · Role: brother and heir of Earl Hugh · First appears: A.D. 1096–1099
In 1098, after Earl Hugh was slain at Anglesey, Robert inherited his estate as arranged with the king. His father, Earl Roger, had held the earldom of Shrewsbury and other territories before him. In 1102, a dispute arose between Robert and King Henry, who had deprived him of his lands and driven him from England.
In 1104, Robert was reconciled with Robert of Normandy, making the king and the earl adversaries. In 1106, Robert left England for Normandy unreconciled with the king and joined the earl’s forces against him. At Tenerchebrai, the king defeated the earl’s forces and Robert was put to flight; William, Earl of Moreton was among those who came with the earl.
In 1112, the king had Robert seized and imprisoned, and in the summer of 1113 sent him to the castle at Wareham.
