Tristan and Iseult

Ogrin

Also known as: the hermit · Family: unknown · Role: hermit · First appears: Chapter 8 · Part 1

At the hermitage in Chapter 8, Ogrin urged Tristan to repent, telling him, “Do penance, Tristan! God pardons the sinner who turns to repentance.” He also told and re-told Iseult the words of his holy book, but she wept, shook her head, and refused the faith he offered. Tristan refused repentance and rejected Ogrin’s demand that he return Iseult to her lawful husband, declaring that he had conquered her and that she was altogether his.

By morning in Chapter 9, Ogrin found Tristan and Iseult at the Hermitage and called them tenderly, warning that love still drove them into wretchedness and asking whether they would finally do penance. After Tristan offered peace to King Mark and promised to go away, and Iseult agreed to separate from him while refusing to repent of her love, Ogrin praised God, gave them wise counsel, and wrote a message offering the proposed peace.
