Athisl (son of Hothbrodd)

Also known as: Athisl · Family: Swedes · Role: son of Hothbrodd · First appears: Book Two · Part 8

In Book Two · Part 8, Hothbrodd fathered Athisl and Hother in the East and appointed Gewar as their tutor. In Book Two · Part 9, Athisl married Urse, Rolf’s mother, hoping their marriage would help him persuade his stepson to reduce the tribute. Urse planned to flee with the royal treasures, while Rolf visited Athisl’s house for the promised gifts and endured a trial by fire. Athisl gave him treasures and a heavy necklace; later, seeing the necklace among Rolf’s ornaments, Athisl stooped to gather the plunder.

In Book Two · Part 11, Rolf avenged himself in battle and overthrew Athisl. In Book Three · Part 4, Athisl died suddenly after drinking too greedily at Rolf’s funeral feast. Hearing of his brother’s death, Hother joined the Swedish empire to Denmark.
