Maria Theresa
Also known as: the queen / the young queen · Family: French court · Role: queen · First appears: Chapter 35
At Fontainebleau in chapter 35, Maria Theresa told Anne of Austria that the king neglected her for pleasures and amusements in which she had no share: “Yes,” she said, “the king neglects me, the king devotes himself to pleasures and amusements only, in which I have no share.” She listened as Monsieur detailed his grievances over Madame attending the baths with the king, while Anne of Austria’s sigh left her withdrawing in tears.
In chapter 37, Louis XIV revealed that Maria Theresa was intensely jealous of the bathing parties with Madame, saying that Monsieur’s jealousy arose from hers because she had been weeping and complaining to Anne of Austria. By chapter 61, Maria Theresa accompanied Madame in her carriage, and in chapter 64 Anne of Austria persuaded her that the proposed lottery could help her monitor and influence Madame.
