Pausanias' Description of Greece

Phædra

Family: mythological · Role: mythological figure · First appears: Book 1 · Chapter 18

In Book 1, Chapter 18, women described two statues of Ilithyia as Cretan votive offerings of Phædra. In Book 1, Chapter 22, when Theseus intended to marry her, he sent Hippolytus to Pittheus at Træzen to be raised and rule there, rather than risk him becoming subject to any children he might have with Phædra.

At Træzen, Phædra saw Hippolytus and became desperately enamoured of him. After he rejected her suit, she contrived his death. In Book 2, Chapter 32, she is described gazing at him as he trained; Book 9 identifies her as the daughter of Minos, and Book 10 places her near her sister Ariadne.
