Pausanias' Description of Greece

Hippocoon

Family: Sparta · Role: claimant to the kingdom · First appears: Book 2 · Chapter 18

Hippocoon contended with Tyndareus for the Spartan kingdom, claiming it by seniority. With Icarius and his party supporting him, he gained the advantage and forced Tyndareus to retire to Pellene.

Later, after Hercules came to Sparta and was refused clearance, he took vengeance on Hippocoon and his sons for what they had done to Œonus. The accounts say Hercules killed Hippocoon and his sons; Tyndareus fled Sparta from them. Hippocoon was also named as the father of Eumedes, Alco, Alcimus, Enaræphorus, Dorceus, and Sebrus.
