The Eddas

Regin

Family: Dwarfs · Role: dwarf · First appears: Elder Edda · The First Lay of Sigurd Fafnicide, or Gripir's Prophecy · Part 1

In the First Lay of Sigurd Fafnicide, Gripir foretells that Sigurd will slay both Fafnir and Regin. In the Second Lay, Regin is named as the son of Hreidmar and brother of Otter and Fafnir. After Fafnir refuses him a share of their father’s patrimony, Regin goes to King Hialprek and becomes his smith. He fosters and instructs Sigurd, tells him of his parentage, urges him to seek Fafnir’s gold, and forges him the sword Gram.

In the Lay of Fafnir, Regin cuts out Fafnir’s heart and drinks his blood. Sigurd then cuts off Regin’s head and eats Fafnir’s heart, drinking the blood of both brothers. In the Poetical Diction, Regin and Fafnir are said to have agreed to kill their father for the gold; Regin later demands that Sigurd cut out and roast Fafnir’s heart as ransom for killing his brother, before Sigurd slays him.
