Aino's mother
Also known as: Joukahainen's mother / the maiden's mother · Family: Lapland · Role: mother · First appears: Runo III · Väinämöinen and Joukahainen · Part 1
In Runo III, Joukahainen returned home sorrowful after pledging Aino to Väinämöinen. His mother rejoiced at the prospect that Väinämöinen might become her daughter’s husband. In Runo IV, she urged Aino to adorn herself and return home, but Aino refused her counsel and said her mother had pledged her to be an old man’s comfort. In her own tale, she recalled receiving gold from Kuutar and silver from Paivatar in her youth.
In Runo IV, the hare brought her news that Aino had drowned. Her tears swelled into streams and became the source of rivers. In Runo VI, she forbade Joukahainen to shoot Väinämöinen, revealing that he was her nephew: “In the world is gladness better. And on earth is song more cheerful, Than to Manala if banished.”
