Twenty Years After

Monsieur de Retz

Also known as: Gondy / the coadjutor · Family: Fronde · Role: ecclesiastic · First appears: Chapter 42

In chapter 42, the coadjutor crossed swords with Aramis, whom he had met at Madame de Rambouillet’s and found particular in his remarks about him; he was also involved in “a duel between allies” with Athos, making Aramis a rival and Athos an opposing ally in these encounters.

In chapter 45, at the Palais Royal that morning, Monsieur de Retz warned Mazarin and the court against civil war, telling them, “I have to beg you to reflect twice ere you cause a civil war in the kingdom.” Mazarin regarded him as an enemy, while Anne of Austria received his offer of influence and then left him exposed to her favorites. At court, Nogent-Beautin, Count de Villeroy, and Maréchal de la Meilleraie spoke of the support he could draw from religion, curates, church porters, and vergers; Louvières also connected his influence with freeing his father and making him cardinal.

Three days later, Monsieur de Retz ordered the curates to turn France against Anne of Austria and Mazarin, saying they should “teach your flocks that the queen is a tyrant.” At six o’clock he sent a curate to find Planchet and bring him to the archbishopric; at eight, he ordered Rochefort brought from the Rue Cassette as a possible revolt leader. That evening at ten, at St. Eustache, he recruited Maillard to organize the Parisian beggars, gave him five hundred pistoles, and joined his own clergy and people to Louvières’s citizens and parliament in a plan to take Paris.
