Le Morte d'Arthur

Sir Segwarides

Also known as: Segwarides · Family: King Mark's court · Role: knight · First appears: Book VII, Chapter XXVI

In Book VII, Chapter XXVI, Segwarides appears among the brothers of Sir Palomides and Sir Safere, all sons of King Astlabor and christened, and he accompanies Dame Lionesse and her party from Castle Perilous. He has done homage to King Arthur as commanded, is associated with Sir Ironside, and encounters Sir Gaheris in rivalry.

In Book VIII, Sir Tristram’s secret visit to Segwarides’ wife leads Segwarides to attack him, but Tristram strikes him down and leaves him wounded; after a long recovery, Segwarides is again gravely wounded when Sir Bleoberis takes the woman away and defeats him during the rescue. At the Isle of Servage, however, he renounces his hatred of Tristram and offers friendship: “I will never hate a noble knight for a light lady.” Tristram and Sir Lamorak then grant him the country, where he frees the prisoners and governs well, before returning to King Mark and La Beale Isoud to tell them how Tristram advanced him.

In Book X, Segwarides rides with Berrant le Apres, defeats Sir Gareth and his horse, and is then unhorsed by Sir Tristram. His brotherhood with Sir Palomides and Sir Safere is later reaffirmed, while Sir Launcelot kills Segwarides at Carlisle during the rescue of Dame Guenever.
