Le Morte d'Arthur

Sir Mador de la Porte

Also known as: Mador de la Porte / Sir Mador · Family: Arthur · Role: knight · First appears: Book VI, Chapter VI

In Book VI, Sir Mador de la Porte was among the knights who defeated the forces serving the King of Northgalis, alongside Sir Mordred and Sir Gahalantine. King Bagdemagus was told that “Sir Mador de la Porte, and Sir Mordred and Sir Gahalantine” had overcome his knights. Sir Mador later met Sir Launcelot in rivalry at the tournament and was defeated, with his shoulder dislocated; he and Sir Mordred were also present at that tournament.

By Book XVIII, Sir Mador was named among the knights associated with Queen Guenever, while Sir Patrise was identified as his cousin. After Patrise’s death, Sir Mador publicly accused Queen Guenever of treason and swore to prove the charge in combat, while she was placed in custody with a fire prepared should he win. Sir Bors took up her defense, but Sir Mador was later defeated by Sir Launcelot. He yielded, released the queen from his quarrel, and declared, “I clearly discharge my quarrel for ever.”

In Book XVIII, Chapter VIII, Sir Mador sued for Queen Guenever’s good grace; through Sir Launcelot’s means, his accusations were forgiven and he was restored to the queen’s favor. By Book XX, his name appeared in the account of Sir Agravaine and Sir Mordred concealing twelve knights at the Castle of Carlisle.
